Living with FASD: A Teenager’s Perspective on Mental Health, Challenges, and Advocacy

10:30AM to 11:10AM PDT / 40min

Transitioning into adulthood can be challenging for anyone, but as someone who lives with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), the journey often challenges even my unique strengths, barriers, and support needs. This presentation explores the realities of moving into adult life with FASD, including how it has impacted my mental health, independence, education, employment, and social relationships. Drawing on my experience in the session I will share how living with FASD has impacted my mental health, emotional regulation, relationships with friends and family. I will also discuss my transition from secondary education to university, including executive functioning demands, academic pressures, self-advocacy, parental advocacy and accessing appropriate supports.
