Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing Among Young People with FASD: Translating Evidence into Action for Educators

11:15AM to 11:55AM PDT / 40min

Challenges with mental health are highly prevalent among people with FASD, but evidence-based interventions that foster wellbeing are lacking. In this presentation, researchers will discuss recent work on the mental health needs of children and youth with FASD and implications for educators, drawing on evidence from several studies led by the Canada FASD Research Network. Results from a large-scale study characterising the types of mental health needs experienced by individuals with FASD across the lifespan will be discussed, alongside insights from individuals with FASD, their caregivers, and service providers related to opportunities for promoting strengths and success in school-based contexts and beyond. Special consideration will be given to translating this research evidence into meaningful and practical strategies for educators working with youth with FASD and their support systems.
