Eckhard Perk
Teacher
School District 36, Surrey, BC
Eckhard has recently retired from 15 years of teaching in Surrey, British Columbia—13 years in the FAStrack program and 2 years as an integration teacher working with low-incidence elementary students. Previoiusly, he had worked with K-12 students as an education assistant in public and private schools; as a residential care worker with violent youth; and as an industrial electrician in the Lower Mainland (before changing careers).
Extensive volunteer experience includes pastoral care at Royal Columbian Hospital (while a student at Regent College) and serving those in the Whalley area of Surrey with NightShift Street Ministries.
His pedagogy with children and youth with FASDs focuses on their unique distinction as learners: it is relational in nature; built on a foundation of trust; structured carefully for their needs; embedded in community connections; and determined to help make good memories in the school system.
Eckhard holds a BA from SFU and a B.Ed from UBC, along with some other credentials, including being an adoptive parent to a productive young man with an FASD.
He enjoys life with his wife and family in rural Maple Ridge.
