FASD and Schooling: Thinking Outside the (Big) Box

/ 40min
Kelly and Eckhard established the two FAStrack high school programs in the Surrey School District and have collectively provided specialized FASD programming for more than 15 years. Their experience suggests that while many students with FASD can be successfully supported within mainstream school settings, some learners require a smaller, specialized educational environment to access learning and to experience sustained success.
For students who may otherwise disengage from school or be at risk of leaving the education system, specialized programming can provide meaningful access to education through individualized supports, predictable routines, reduced cognitive load, and strong, trusting relationships with staff. A reduced daily schedule provides opportunities for students to engage in academic learning while also developing self-regulation, social competencies, physical activity, and community connections.
Within this environment, students are supported to develop functional academic, social-emotional, and independent-living skills while working toward graduation or an Adult Dogwood. Over time, many students demonstrate increased engagement, improved self-regulation, and greater capacity to participate in learning and community settings.
This presentation will highlight practical, strengths-based approaches used within FAStrack and the broader Education Services School community, including supported work experience, job coaching, recreation-based community participation, and coordinated transition planning.
